Analyzing the Rising Trend of Telehealth In the Arab Countries

Telehealth is one of the most trending aspects of the healthcare segment in today’s time. It is significantly changing the functioning of healthcare. Now the patient can connect with the doctor sitting in any part of the world. With this, long-distance consultations are possible too at any time of the day. Along with medical consultation, Telehealth is used for medical education, communications, and enhancing the necessary knowledge and skills of the healthcare professionals.

Today, the countries in the MENA region are actively adopting Telehealth in their healthcare system. Earlier, the countries have issues such as lack of digital infrastructure, business incentives, regulatory frameworks & policies, cyber security threats, etc.  Over the years, some countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman have taken proactive steps to overcome these challenges and enhanced telehealth adoption. Governments are also making substantial investments in both healthcare and Telehealth. Several global and regional private players are also taking initiatives to enter the telehealth market.

Telehealth Scenario in the UAE

In 2019, the UAE adopted the federal medical liability law 2016 (‘Medical Liability Law’), under which the terms and conditions for offering Telehealth services in the country were defined and regulated. As per the earlier law, face-to-face interaction and physical (in-person examination) were mandatory for physicians to check the patients. Now with this law, distance health services are possible. The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), in the previous year, approved six telemedicine solutions to provide their services in the country, which include NextGen Healthcare, VSee, OKADOC, Doxy.me, GetBEE, and Mind Mina Telemedicine.
